The Northwest Arts Center presents ‘Becoming American,’ by artist and fashion designer Dong Kyu Kim, Americas 2020: All Media Best of Show artist. On view from September 1-30, Kim’s solo exhibition presents mixed media artworks that explore the transitioning paradigms of international labor, the collapse of neoliberalism, and what it means to be an American.

Growing up in South Korea in the 1980s and 90s, Kim experienced the radical reshaping of the South Korean economy and increased globalization. He became obsessed with the concept of the American Dream: the capitalistic ideal of money, fame, and success. His work asks questions about the impact of American capitalism and neoliberalism on one’s values.

‘Becoming American’ features recent works from one of Kim’s series entitled “Temporarily Qualified#5(2007-2019).” The series is a culmination of Kim’s multiple attempts to obtain a green card since 2007. Thirteen football jerseys serve as the substrate for photographs from Kim’s H1B visas and driver’s licenses. For Kim, the football jerseys represent the attributes of America that he has always revered: world power, military strength, economic power, privilege, and status. The completed series functions as personal chronicles that represent his memories and experiences.

An opening reception and online viewing is scheduled Thursday, September 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Both exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Please see the reception event or NAC Facebook Event for more details. Masks are not required, but individuals who are not fully vaccinated or deemed vulnerable are encouraged to continue to wear masks.

Kim will also be presenting in the Art Seminar series on Friday, September 2 at 12 noon in Memorial Hall, Rm. 114, Minot State University. We invite you to attend.

The Walter Piehl Gallery is located in the Northwest Arts Center on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. The Arts Center is open TWThF 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 1-5 p.m. and by special arrangement. It is closed holidays.
