The Northwest Arts Center presents ‘From Here to Here,’ an exhibition by North Dakota artists Matthew Anderson and Michael Conlan, on view in the Northwest Arts Center from April 28 to May 26.

Matthew Anderson, originally from Gackle, ND, received his BA from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, and his MFA from the University of North Dakota. His drawings are expressions of his wonderment for the North Dakota landscape. Anderson’s practice is intuitive and responsive to the immediate experience of making, as if playing visual music with the landscape.

Michael Conlan, originally from Williston, ND, earned his BFA from Portland State University in Portland, OR, and his MFA at the University of North Dakota. Conlan’s current body of work is centered around abstracting the seemingly arbitrary dividing of the landscape through formal investigations of line, color, form and hierarchy. He is carefully distilling the concept of the landscape motif to its essence as he balances between the boundaries of the abstract and the non-objective.

‘From Here to Here’ explores the landscape and concept of place. Conlan works in a reductive manner which strips the idea of the landscape down to its basic formal elements, almost to the point of the non-objective yet still conceptually rooted in the landscape. Anderson uses an additive approach to investigate his local landscape, he utilizes an intuitive process of mark-making and responds to both the land and the work in from of him. The exhibition is a conversation proposed by both artists that revolves around the idea of place, art making and what art is.

A reception with the artists is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 from 6:30-8 pm. Artist talks to begin at 7. Masks are not required, but individuals who are not fully vaccinated or deemed vulnerable are encouraged to continue to wear masks.

This project is made possible by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association and is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
