Of This Place
February 9 @ 10:00 am - March 9 @ 5:00 pm
The Northwest Arts Center presents ‘Of This Place,’ an exhibition by North Dakota artist and painter Avis Veikley, on view in the Northwest Arts Center’s Walter Piehl Gallery from February 9 to March 9.
Veikley is a born and raised Minot area native with strong roots to the area. She attended Minot State and received her BS degree in Music and Art. After earning her Master of Music from Northern Illinois University at DeKalb, Veikley returned to Minot and worked as a graphic designer locally for 20 years. In 2006, she became the Director of the Northwest Art Center at Minot State and worked steadily as such until 2018. Currently, Veikley is an adjunct instructor for the Minot State University Music Department where she teaches percussion and assists with the Marching Band. While music keeps her busy, the hunt for striking landscapes keeps her in adventure.
“In pursuit of images, I have come home with my car looking like it was in a monster truck mud rally; I have executed bootlegger U-turns on countless prairie roads that faded into nothingness; and I have had a close encounter with a badger,” recounts Veikley. “I have also confirmed my suspicion that this state is astonishingly beautiful. My goal is to touch it all through my paintbrush.”
A reception with the artist is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9 from 6:30-8 pm. Artist talk to begin at 7. Masks and physical distancing are required.
The Walter Piehl Gallery is located in the Northwest Arts Center on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. It is open TWThF, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 1-5 p.m. and by special arrangement. It is closed holidays.
This project is made possible by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association and is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
