The Northwest Arts Center and the Taube Museum of Art present ‘Pop Cars,’ an exhibition by North Dakota artist Mack Schroer, and ‘Wild Rides,’ posters from the private collection of Laurie Geller, on view from May 11 to June 8.

Schroer found his calling on a ranch in Berryton, Kansas through comic books and animation. His love for visual narrative evolved in illustration, 2D animation and graphic design. In 2008, Schroer graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Digital Design. Schroer’s current work calls on his diverse skills as graphic designer, illustrator, painter and storyboard writer.

‘Pop Cars’ got its start as a simple Homer Simpson doodle on a daily-log sheet one snowy February day in 2018. When the computer-log went down, Schroer, an oil-field truck driver at the time, reverted to using a hand-kept ledger on Keller’s Daily Logs. Traced lines became a city-scape and Homer’s portrait followed. The idea soon evolved with selections of pop culture figures who get down behind the wheel, characters who are defined by their vehicle of choice.

Laurie Geller’s poster collection began in the 90s when she joined a Pearl Jam fan club. Gig posters were a unique souvenir that represented her favorite bands and venues. As her collection grew, her interest became less about the bands and more about the artists creating the poster. “I fell in love with the art form,” Geller says,“the artwork’s content, the artists, and their craft.”

A reception with Schroer and Geller is scheduled May 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The reception and exhibition are jointly hosted by the Taube Museum of Art and the Northwest Arts Center. Experience live art at both locations! Both exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public. Masks and social distancing are required.

The Taube Museum of Art is located in historic downtown Minot at 2 N Main St. Museum and Gift Shop hours: Tues – Fri 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by special appointment.

The Northwest Arts Center is located on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. It is open TWThF, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 1-5 p.m. and by special arrangement. It is closed holidays.

This project is made possible by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association and is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
